Movie vs Book
This past Wednesday I had the privilege of watching the film The Great Gatsby, which is of course an adaptation of the book, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This week for my blog, I chose to write about my overall thoughts about the movie in contrast to the book, and how I thought it was represented. After finishing it, I thought the movie adaptation stayed very truthful to the book in many ways and was represented very accurately. I thought that the choice of cast was very intelligent and worked very well, especially Nick Carraway's character played by Tobey Maguire and Jay Gatsby’s character played by Leonardo DiCaprio. A few minor details such as a few of the songs used in the movie were confusing to me as they didn't really fit the situation in my opinion and I think a different song choice would be better suited. However this small detail didn't take away from the films overall brilliance. Something that I thought was interesting was Nick’s little subplot with the doctor who referred to him as “morbidly alcoholic” and how it showed him looking back on the experiences with Gatsby, then proceeding to write it down by hand and eventually type it into his finished work. This was an interesting addition to the movie that I thought for the most part worked quite well. For the rest of the film, it stayed right on track with the book without any major differences, other than little details of course, that I could find.

What do you guys think? Did the movie do Fitzgerald's masterpiece justice?

  1. Great choice for a post topic. I agree with you about the film - I think it did the book justice and was a great representation of the story. I also agree that the songs didn't quite fit in to the film, but it was interesting to hear them when watching something about the 1920's time period. While watching the movie, I was able to predict what occurred next at almost every point, so I would say the movie stuck to the book's plot very closely.

  2. I was shocked at how much the movie quoted the book word for word. It was really interesting to see the book come to life and it cleared up some questions I had about the book. I did not really notice the music choice that much though.

  3. Interesting topic! I agree, the film did a great job of capturing what took place in the novel.

  4. I agree with what Jadyn said. The movie quoted the book, and did so successfully; it didn't seem forced or out of place. This is something that seems like it'd be difficult to achieve, and I was quite impressed.

  5. I thought that it was super interesting how the movie used modern songs. It stayed very true to the book but still added some modern twists into it.

  6. The movie seems interesting, I regret not being able to come to school Wednesday. I do have a bit of a question however. Did the movie change your perspective on the book and if so, was it for the better or worse? Personally, I like having my own ideas about the book, and watching the movie could have changed my perspective entirely, which I might not have liked. What did you guys think?

  7. I thought the film was very good and well made, but like all movies, it didn't live up to the standards set by the book. This is because it is much easier to explain every little detail in a book than in a movie.

  8. This is so cool how you compared and contrasted the movie and the book. I found the movie and the book both quite interesting but the visual effects in the movie were astonishing. But, I also agree with Cole when he says that "it didn't live up to the standards set by the book." In the end they both have their pros and cons.

  9. Nice job! I like the comparison of the book to movie, but I totally disagree with Xander and Cole cause I LOVE the movie and Leonardo DiCaprio <3 <3 <3

  10. I actually disagree with Cole and Xander, because I think that the book and movie can be totally independent and standing by themselves, therefore I don't think the book really had standards for the movie. They both conveyed the same message, but in different ways (in my opinion). What does everyone else think?
